Director (Part time director, part time teacher)
​Position Overview
The Maple Leaf Children’s Center Director provides leadership and vision for the center’s programs and gives hands-on guidance to the staff in implementing that vision. The director manages all aspects of the program including staff supervision, budgeting and financial oversight, child recruitment, enrollment, and curriculum development. The director fosters open and honest communication with parents, the Board of Directors, teachers, and the broader community. The director must demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and a commitment to working in partnership with these stakeholders to promote a safe and welcoming environment.

Organization Description
Maple Leaf Children's Center is a non-profit, state-licensed children’s center has been educating young children since 1976. We are located on Thetford Hill and have been licensed by the Vermont Agency of Human Services to provide care for a maximum of 18 children at a time, and each year we serve about 40 Upper Valley families in school year and summer programs. Maple Leaf’s students range in age from eighteen months to seven years; for the older children, we serve as a bridge between their school day and their time at home with their families.

We utilize emergent curriculum in creating a vital play-based setting in which our children feel safe, challenged, and appreciated as individuals. We value diversity and a connection to the outdoors.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred in early childhood education or an equivalent focus.
  • At least four years of experience teaching in a child care or elementary school setting.
  • Current Vermont Pre-K to Grade 3 Educator’s License is strongly preferred but not required.  
  • Knowledge of VT state regulations pertaining to licensing and accreditation.
  • Supervision experience in a childcare center, elementary school or similar setting.
  • Administrative, curriculum design, fundraising and budgeting experience in a childcare center or elementary school or similar setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Sensitivity and understanding as to the needs of children and their familiesThe ability to support and work with a diverse range of families and children.​
Position Details
Supervision responsibilities -  The director hires, supervises, and evaluates all staff members. The director is responsible for planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, conducting monthly staff meetings, and fostering continuous learning. The director assists the teachers in the planning of programs and works with the entire staff to develop and implement the Maple Leaf curriculum.

Classroom Responsibilities - The director’s most important duties concern the children in our care. Through collaboration, the director will mentor and support the teaching staff so that the center can achieve its mission. The director also acts as a teacher in the classrooms for a minimum of 15 and up to 25 hours a week. Regardless of the day-to-day interaction, the director will establish relationships with the children and families and relate to them in a positive, consistent, and fair manner. The director works to create an environment that meets the emotional, social, educational, recreational, and physical needs of the Maple Leaf children, and works with teaching specialists who are involved in the development of our children.


​Other Position Responsibilities
  • Work in collaboration with teachers, board members, community members and parents to implement and continually improve and refresh the Maple Leaf curriculum and center.
  • Maintain effective communication with current and prospective parents, (bi-annual parent conferences, email updates/newsletters and admissions meetings).
  • Oversee the financial management of the center, including but not limited to, payroll processing, purchasing equipment and supplies, paying rent, utilities and insurance, monitoring accounts payable and receivable, managing tuition payments, reporting out to the board monthly and preparing budget annually.
  • Maintain, report and update as needed all practices to remain accordance with current licensing, accreditation and insurance standards.
  • Oversee facility to ensure an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for children.
  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with our landlords at the First Congregational Church.
  • Plan and implement Center operations including schedules, staff meetings and regular events.
  • Organize and execute fundraising initiatives including events and grants.
  • Other duties as assigned.​
